U.S. Open Predictions
This year’s U.S. Open is
being disguised as Andre Agassi’s retirement party, but unfortunately it
should just be another party for Roger Federer.
Federer will win another grand slam title, but it should be a wild two weeks in New York City. Let’s start with Agassi, who got a brutal draw. He’ll bow out in the second round to up-and-coming star Marcos Baghdatis and realize it is time to ride off in the sunset. The bottom half of this draw is so loaded that Andy Roddick will face Baghdatis in the fourth round. I like Roddick’s confidence right now and with Australia revenge on his mind, it’s Roddick to the quarters. His opponent will be young Frenchman Richard Gasquet, who will stun Ivan Ljubicic and then Novak Djokovic. The other quarterfinal in this draw will be a Spanish convention between Rafael Nadal and Tommy Robredo. Nadal shouldn’t have too much trouble getting into the semifinals where Roddick will be waiting for him in a heavyweight battle. Federer’s draw should be a breeze for the world’s No. 1. He’ll get past Juan Carlos Ferrero and head to the quarters where Federer will face Tomas Berdych, who will get past Agustin Calleri in the fourth round. Unfortunately James Blake will be bounced in the third round. The other quarterfinal will feature Andy Murray and Tommy Haas. Haas will get past Oliver Rochus and Murray will dispatch of Nikolay Davydenko in fourth round matches. Federer won’t have too much trouble with Berdych despite having lost to him a couple of years ago, while Murray continues his rapid ascent under coach Brad Gilbert and heads to the semis. Roddick will be fired up for Nadal in New York and gets to another Open final. Guess who he’ll lose to. Yup, it’s Federer’s world and no one can stop him. He’s in a class of his own and not even Nadal will be the talk of tennis after two thrilling weeks at the Open. What about the ladies? If Justine Henin-Hardenne could just figure out Amelie Mauresmo, she’d be headed to Federer’s class. This tournament she won’t have to worry about it and we’ll coast to the title. Henin should get to the quarters where American Lindsay Davenport will be waiting for her if she can stay healthy for a week. The other quarterfinals will be a pair of Russians, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva. It’s Henin-Hardenne and Kuznetsova in a semifinal. Kuznetsova, a 2004 Open champion, is starting to find her old form again and could pose a challenge for Henin-Hardenne. Mauresmo’s draw will be a wild one because she’s going out in the fourth round to Ana Ivanovic, who will then face Martina Hingis in the quarters. The other quarter will be Maria Sharapova against the story of the Open unseeded Jamea Jackson. Hey, you’ve gotta pick an American at the Open. Sharapova will then face Hingis in the semifinals. Henin-Hardenne gets to another final and shockingly so does Hingis. The magic ends there for her because this is Henin-Hardenne’s tournament to lose.
